How did a handful of students change the course of history in Trinidad and Tobago? Between February and April 1970, the streets of Port of Spain were filled with young Black men and women chanting ‘Power to the People’, fists raised in a salute learned from the U.S. Black Panthers. This was the legendary Black Power revolution in Trinidad and Tobago, which captivated the imaginations of their youthful followers and made the government of Dr. Eric Williams and the white establishment very nervous indeed. The revolution was ended by a State of Emergency, but this in turn was threatened by a surprise mutiny among the soldiers of the Regiment.

“Most Argentines, if you ask, will tell you: ‘In Argentina there are no black people.’” So opens AFROARGENTINES, a film which unearths the hidden history of black people in Argentina and their contributions to Argentine culture and society, from the slaves who fought in the revolutionary wars against Spain, to the contemporary struggles of black Argentines against racism and marginalization. The film uses historical documents from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, but is mostly based on interviews with black Argentines from a variety of backgrounds: intellectuals and taxi drivers, immigrants from Africa and native Afroargentines.

Isolated in the mountains of Trinidad, the district of Paramin, once a year at Carnival time sheds its rural languor and erupts into an inferno of blue-painted ‘jabs’ or devils. This 46-minute documentary, filmed in the two weeks leading up to Carnival, follows Kootoo, King Devil, as he prepares with his three brothers to once again win the village competition for the most convincing devil band. Known for his athletic prowess, and given to extraordinary feats like ripping up trees and scaling tall buildings, the charismatic Kootoo must still work hard with his band of devils to win the prize in the face of serious competition from a new generation of ‘jabs’.

That same year, there were 44 reported murders of transgender persons worldwide and the United States Congress was beginning to debate whether or not to include sexual orientation and gender identity in the federal hate crime law.
