Past Seminar: “Echoes Of Voices: Inclusive Filmmaking
Join us on November 9, 2024, for the Activist Filmmaker Bootcamp presented by Workers Unite Film Festival. Have you been an activist in your union, community, or school? Been dying to get your ideas about a movement effort out to others on YouTube, Vimeo, or another platform? The Activist Filmmaker Bootcamp can help move you from complete inexperience and fear of filming to making your first short documentary or narrative film.

In June 2015, 24 immigrant and first-generation women joined a one-day workshop, creating three short films: COMING AND LIVING IN AMERICA, BORDERS INSIDE AND OUT, and LUNA’S STORY. The project was presented by New York Women in Film & Television, taught by Third World Newsreel, and supported by City Council Member Elizabeth Crowley and NYC’s Cultural Immigrant Initiative.

This workshop for immigrant women activists uses a participatory approach, where everyone collaborates on documentary shorts while learning video production, camera, and sound skills.

TWN provides video production classes to Mandarin-speaking seniors at SelfHelp Latimer Gardens in Flushing. In 2020, students learned filming and editing via phone with teacher Yung-Jen Yang. The Su-Casa program is supported by NYC Council and the Department of Cultural Affairs, with thanks to Council member Peter Koo.
Participants in our workshops gain valuable skills in media production, storytelling techniques, and digital advocacy. These skills are crucial in amplifying your voice in the pursuit of social justice, enabling you to craft narratives that inspire and instigate change in the community.
