Red Detachment of Women

This film presents the famous ballet from China. It is a blend of traditional Western theatre, Peking opera, folk dance, calisthenics, and acrobatics. It tells the story of a women's military unit during the Chinese Revolution. This filmed adaptation is a significant example of the artistic style developed by Chinese intellectuals who challenged the conventions of classical Chinese art and became engaged in the fierce debates over the role of art during the Cultural Revolution.
